Girl Scout Sunday & Pics
Mar 5, 2018
Thank you to our Girl Scout troops who were present yesterday at Mass to serve! The young ladies greeted people as they entered the church; processed with Fr. Holloway; sat together and brought up the gifts at Mass. See photos here.
Girl Scouts' mission is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. March 12, 2018 is the 106th anniversary of the start of Girl Scouts in the United States. Currently, we have about 70 Girl Scouts that meet regularly at Prince of Peace in first through seventh grade. They do a lot more than just sell cookies. Here are some examples of what they have been up to this 2017/2018 school year:
1st grade: Learned how to take care of animals; will be building a bird bath and growing flowers for the school garden
2nd grade: Made blessing bags to hand out to the less fortunate; learned how to manage money (tithe, save, spend); marched in the Veterans’ Day Parade in Birmingham
3rd grade: Shopped for and packed Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes; learned about computer programming
4th grade: Collected unused Girl Scout Uniforms and curriculum for fellow troops affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston; refurbishing the patio at First Light Women & Children’s Center
6th grade: Are using cookie proceeds to support our troops; tutored younger students
7th grade: Sent over 100 cards to sister Girl Scouts in Puerto Rico after the hurricane; volunteered in the Weekender Backpack program; hosted the annual parish father-daughter dance
