As if we do not have enough national crises, we are in another one. It is a massive public health crisis and it predates COVID-19. Suicide rates have been rising sharply in the USA for years.
It grieves me to think that many Christians--many Catholics--who have lost loved ones and friends to suicide believe that dying by suicide sends one to hell. The Church teaches something quite different. And, when we combine an understanding of the conditions that must be in place for a mortal sin with an understanding of depression and other mental illness, we come to understand that it is difficult to imagine a death by suicide being a mortal sin.
I made this 30-minute video to address this. I hope you find it helpful.
