Confirmation 2021

Congratulations to the 80 students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Steven Raica at Prince of Peace on April 14 and 15!  Joining Bishop Raica on the altar for the Mass were:  Fr. John Fallon, Fr. Jose Luis, Fr. Mugagga, Fr. Reju, The Very Rev. Justin Ward (as master of ceremony) and Deacon Rick DiGiorgio.  Families and sponsors of the Confirmation candidates gathered in the sanctuary on two separate evenings to allow for social distancing in the pews.

Fr. Fallon said, “Bishop Raica, it is a great honor to have you present with us tonight.  You are going to confirm a wonderful group of young people who are well prepared.  And the reason they are well-prepared is their wonderful parents.  Parents, you are the first teachers of your children in the ways of faith.  Thank you for the marvelous job you have done handing on that gift of faith.  Thanks also to our teachers and to our catechists here at Prince of Peace.  You and the children have been online all year learning more about the faith and it’s a very different approach this year.  And that’s why parents your role is so important.  Bishop Raica, they have all received the Sacrament of Reconciliation and I believe they are excited about Confirmation in your presence here tonight.”

This year, Confirmation classes were taught online until the very last class, which was held in-person at the church.  This last class gave the students and catechists an opportunity to finally meet in person after months of virtual meetings on Google Classroom and Zoom.  The weekly classes began with a group lecture on Google Classroom and then broke into small groups led by one of our catechists on Zoom to discuss the week’s lesson in depth.

We are very grateful to our adult and teen peer mentor volunteer catechists who jumped in and delivered their lectures and lessons online this year.    Thanks also go out to POP School teachers, the church formation staff, and the students’ parents for readying this year’s class to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.  It truly takes a village!
