Thanks to the generosity of our church and school, the POP Knights of Columbus' Pennies from Heaven campaign raised over $27,400. The Knights launched this fundraiser on February 28 asking parishioners and POP School students to collect change in containers that they distributed after Mass and through the school office. The purpose of this campaign was to award a stipend to all nine diocesan seminarians to assist with their educational and living expenses while they study to become a priest.
During the first two weekends of March, parishioners brought their containers with them to weekend Mass and deposited the contents into a coin counter after Mass. Jacqueline McLeod and her family participated in the coin drive saying, "The Knights do so much to support our clergy, it's an honor to support them in this small way." The POP Knights were stationed in the church’s gathering space alongside the coin counter, ready to assist as needed.
POP Catholic School students brought their filled coin collection containers to school on Wednesday, March 10 and enjoyed depositing their “pennies” into the coin counter. (POP School students attend Mass every Wednesday morning – some in person and some virtually due to the pandemic – and the deposit time occurred after Mass on a class-by-class basis.) Both adults and children enjoyed the satisfaction of watching the parish total grow after dropping their donations into the machine. They knew that their “pennies” were going toward a great cause – supporting our future priests.
In addition to fundraising for the seminarians, the POP Knights set up a virtual meeting with diocesan seminarian Daniel Sessions and some POP School students. Daniel is studying in Rome and described his life as a seminarian and answered their questions. You can watch this video on the POP YouTube channel.
Grand Knight Don DeCesare said, “I write to you today with deep gratitude for your support of our "Pennies from Heaven" coin drive. The generosity of our entire parish family has made the effort a great success. A very special thank you to each of our parish priests, for speaking of the coin drive during Mass.” He added, “We are grateful for our parish and pray that God continues to bless you and your loved ones.”
