Congratulations to the 52 POP School students who won ribbons at the diocesan art show at John Paul II High School in Huntsville on April 6, 2019. Eighth grade student Nick Hernandez not only won a first place ribbon in the drawing category but he also won a Diocesan Award, which is given to one elementary, middle and high school student as the best of the best at the show. His drawing of a giraffe is being framed and will be placed on display in the Diocese of Birmingham’s office!
Catholic elementary and high schools from around the diocese sent hundreds of pieces of art in to be judged in the five categories of printmaking, collage, mixed media, painting and drawing. Every school was permitted to sent 10 pieces of art per grade to the contest. The 204 first, second, third and honorable mention pieces for grades Kindergarten through twelve were displayed at the show.
Fine arts education is an integral part of the curriculum throughout all grades at Prince of Peace Catholic School. Kindergarten through fifth grade students take fine art with teacher JoJo Settine who weaves her art curriculum around the Kindergarten through grade five core standards. This talented instructor also teaches choir and has 26 students in the middle school band! POP’s middle school students are instructed in fine art by teacher Shannon Bourn. Both teachers also offer summer art classes and camps at the school.
