Weekend Backpack Ministry Appeal

Our weekend backpack ministry began in 2015 serving 16 hungry middle school-age students at a local middle school. Over the past few years, that number has increased and we also added St. Barnabas and Holy Family Catholic Academy to our program. This fall, over 40 more students were identified by their school as food insecure over the weekends, bringing our weekly weekend backpack total to 179 students. On average, we purchase and pack 716 bags of food every month, each bag containing two days’ worth of breakfast, lunch and dinner food.

This isn’t extra food. These children come from homes where the cupboard is bare. “It gives them hope,” said Mac Johnston of Holy Family Catholic Academy. “We make it easy for the kids to grab a bag on the way home without embarrassment,” he added.

To help fill 716 weekend backpacks each month, we are asking for your support  Here’s a great idea for #GivingTuesday - sponsor a weekend backpack for a child for one year for $250! Please consider sharing some of the gifts that God has given to you with others through this stewardship outreach to hungry children. You can donate online here, drop an envelope in the weekend offertory basket or mail it to the church office at 4600 Preserve Parkway, Hoover, AL, 35226.
